The Middle East and North Africa region covers countries and territories from Morocco to the Islamic Republic of Iran, including Djibouti and Sudan in sub-Saharan Africa.

The region is home to nearly 418 million people, including 157 million, or 38 per cent, who are under the age of 18. Nearly 10,000 children are born across the region every year.The Middle East and North Africa Regional Office is a hub for information, technical expertise, oversight and coordination for UNICEF Country Offices. It also supports these offices in their efforts to raise much-needed resources.

Specialist advisers based in Amman help develop programmes in health and nutrition, child protection, adolescent development, HIV and AIDS, education, water and sanitation, social policy and emergency preparedness. How can you make a difference?

The Child Protection Specialist reports to the Regional Child Protection Specialist (P-4) for guidance and general supervision. The Specialist supports the development and preparation of the Social Norms component of the Child Protection programs and is responsible for managing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting of progress of child protection programs within the region program. In particular, the Child Protection Specialist (Social Norms) will be responsible for supporting efforts to end child marriage and FGM, in addition to social and behaviour change initiatives related to child protection. In collaboration with C4D and other sectors, the CP Specialist will provide technical guidance and support throughout the programming processes to MENA country offices to facilitate programmes that create concrete and sustainable protective environment for children, with regards to social norms and behavior change, in particular against all forms of harmful practices, and strengthening community based child protection mechanisms against all forms of violence, abuse, and exploitation.

The Specialist contributes to achievement of results according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology (RBM) and UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An Advanced University degree in international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law and other social science field is required;
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in social development planning and management in child protection and/other related areas at the international level some of which preferably were served in a developing region is required. Relevant experience in child protection and related areas, program/project development and management in a UN system agency or organization is an asset. Experience in both development and humanitarian contexts is an added advantage;
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is an asset.
