United States of America: Women and Children Program Coordinator
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. The IRC’s Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration (RAI) department creates opportunities for refugees and other vulnerable migrants to gain stability and control of their future. In FY 2022, the RAI network served more than 300,000 unique clients through a diverse portfolio of programs aimed at five core outcomes: Health, Safety, Economic Wellbeing, Education and Power. IRC’s safety and wellness programs help heal and rebuild communities that have been deeply affected by grief, loss, and displacement by providing mental health and psychosocial support, mental health and interpersonal violence screening, and referral as needed to more specialized supports.
Job Overview:
Since late spring 2022, New York City (NYC) has experienced a significant increase in the number of asylum seekers after having recently arrived via the US southern border. Some of this is due to the transport of asylum seekers from Texas and Arizona to New York City which has been provided by Texas and Arizona state and local authorities. With over 18,000 newly arrived migrants, the Mayor’s Office in collaboration with New York City’s Health and Hospital (NYC H+H) have established four Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers (HERRCs) within the boroughs of NYC.
The IRC has been tasked with providing technical support in the areas of legal orientation, case management, the establishment of safe spaces for children and women and delivering best practices for preventing the abuse and exploitation of guests by staff or vendors. Technical support will be provided through the development of trauma-informed client-centered subject matter materials and trainings. Additionally, referral pathways based on strategic community partnerships with other service providers, government agencies, foundations, employers, and additional key stakeholders will be developed and provided.
The Women and Child Program Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and delivery of technical support for implementing women and children’s safe spaces in the NYC H+H and DocGo run HERRCs in New York City. The anticipated duration of this assignment will be 3 months with possibility for extending.
Major Responsibilities:
- Model, promote and uphold a culture of values as reflected in the IRC way: Standards of Professional Conduct – Integrity, Accountability, Service and Equality and the Respect at work policy.
- Support the development of a women and children safe space toolkit that includes guidance on an establishing and operating a safe environment for learning, socializing, and community cohesion and accessible recreational activities with the Safety, Education and Wellness (SEW) Technical Unit.
- Support the delivery of Training of Trainers with SEW Technical Unit, focused on key approaches, principles and practices for running women and children’s safe spaces, including the use of the developed resources from the toolkit.
- Develop and manage the trainings schedules for providing on best practices for operating women and children’s safe spaces to Docgo and other HERRCs staff as appropriate.
- Monitor implementation of new women and children’s safe spaces to help troubleshoot and contribute to recommendation or further improvement of workflow and practice
- Map and develop referral pathways for strategic and complimentary services in the NYC area
- Comply with all IRC policies, procedures and protocols including adherence to the IRC Way and Child Safeguarding.

Job Requirements:

Undergraduate degree in a field related to the promotion of women and children's health and wellbeing (i.e., social work, education, nursing, etc.)

Minimum 2 years relevant experience.

Two years of experience managing or coordinating a project and/or providing critical operational support to a project or program highly desired.

Strong understanding of how to work with women, children and families who are from different cultures and have different immigration status, including familiarity with services and supports that people may access.

Deep commitment to serving communities across immigration statuses facing multiple obstacles and vulnerabilities.

Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively across lines of difference with respect to race, gender, ethnicity, language, religion and age

Lived experience as a refugee or immigrant is highly desired; in lieu of lived experience, experience working with refugees and/or immigrants, in particular with individuals and communities across immigration statuses

Commitment to anti-racism and ongoing learning

Expert communication skills in English (written and verbal) with a demonstrated ability to synthesize complex materials and technical topics into key learnings and insights for non-experts, in a cross-cultural environment

Experience facilitating trainings and/or leading a team or mentoring

Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to cultivate and strengthen internal and external relationships with stakeholders

Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties and manage time effectively

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with data-tracking systems
Language Skills:
- Fluency in at least one commonly spoken client language, such as Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Indigenous languages spoken in Mexico or Central America highly desired

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirement
