WHO WE ARE:
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
THE PURPOSE:
Under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader in Mubi, the Protection Field Officer 1 contributes to the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of Protection activities, with a focus on Protection of Civilian Population activities (PCP) activities. S/he will work on a broad range of protection-related issues such as Sexual Violence, Healthcare in Danger, child protection, and allegations of violations of the IHL.
YOUR ROLE:
- Contributes to the design and the implementation of protection activities under the supervision of the line manager.
- Collects, compiles, and interprets protection concerns and their humanitarian consequences for the civilian population and prepares written reports and updates ICRC database (Prot6).
- Carries out confidential debriefings with individuals affected by armed conflicts and leads focus group discussions with affected communities.
- Maintains and/or develops an adequate network with all relevant stakeholders (local communities, humanitarian organizations, authorities, religious leaders, NRCS, etc.) to have a good analysis of the situation and updated information relevant for the work of the organization.
- Contributes to the organization of and takes part in field missions and protection related activities and contributes to the reporting following field missions (field trip reports, Minutes of Meetings, etc.).
- Contributes to the analysis of the security, socioeconomic, cultural, and political environment relevant to the ICRC and shares relevant information with team members and reports any change in the situation.
YOUR PROFILE: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- University degree in a relevant field (law, public policy, international relations, political science, communication, social work)
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the humanitarian sector with a focus on Protection/Child protection/SGBV
- Excellent written and spoken English and Hausa – Compulsory, Fula/Fulfulde (Fulani), Kanuri or other languages used in Nigeria is an asset.
- Computer proficiency: knowledge in Excel, Word and Power Point, use of database
- Sound analytical skills, good knowledge (political, cultural, and geographical) of northeast Nigeria.
- Ability to keep discretion and handling confidential matters effectively.
- Ability to work in a multicultural and multiethnic environment.
- Applicant must have a valid working permit to work in Nigeria.
