From the 9th to the 11th of June, the Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action convened the 2026 Annual Meeting under the theme "Child Protection in a Resource-Constrained World: From Challenges in Financing to Innovative Solutions." The meeting also marked the Alliance's 10th anniversary, providing an opportunity to reflect on a decade of collective action to strengthen child protection in humanitarian action, while looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the sector.
Over three days, 975 participants from around the world came together to explore how the child protection sector can respond to escalating needs amid shrinking resources. The meeting featured 13 sessions and an ‘Open Space’ forum, bringing together practitioners, researchers, donors, policymakers, children and youth, and community leaders to share evidence, innovations, and practical solutions. With speakers representing 32 organisations (40% local and national organisations) and contributions from children and young people throughout the meeting, discussions highlighted both the challenges facing the sector and the opportunities to transform how child protection is understood, financed, and delivered.
During the meeting participants emphasised that, while funding cuts are having profound impacts on children and services, they also present an opportunity to rethink current approaches and strengthen the way the sector works together. The Annual Meeting closed with a shared commitment to build on the discussions and collective learning of the past decade to meet evolving challenges and continue advancing child protection in humanitarian action.

This background paper sets the scene for the 2026 Annual Meeting for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action, examining how escalating humanitarian needs, acute funding cuts, system-wide reforms, and the erosion of international humanitarian and human rights law are reshaping the operating environment for child protection.
The paper is intended to help inform abstract submissions by situating proposed contributions within the key challenges, trends, and emerging responses shaping child protection in an increasingly resource-constrained world.
The paper is available in Arabic, English, French, and Spanish.
