Denmark: Protection Coordinator

DCA prioritizes its obligation to mainstream protection throughout humanitarian operations: to ensure that programming does not do harm and that rights holders are safe and respected. As a means to amplify impact, DCA seeks to integrate protection outcomes across other sectoral interventions. And where there is a value add in doing so, DCA responds to protection concerns with specialized standalone interventions, including GBV prevention and response and child protection.

About the role: Referring to the Sr. Protection Advisor, the Protection Coordinator is a key support function in DCA’s Humanitarian Response and Mine Action Unit.

The Protection Coordinator will demonstrate the following key capacities:

  • a proven quality track record working on protection, ideally from across areas of responsibility
  • demonstrated knowledge of current sectoral best practices and familiarity with humanitarian architecture
  • Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution in relevant field (International Law, International Relations, Political Science, Social Work, Humanitarian Assistance, Sociology, Psychology or another related field) or equivalent
  • at least years’ relevant experience in complex emergency settings
  • evidenced capacity building skills, reflecting applied understanding of adult learning concepts
  • strong written and oral communication skills that demonstrate empathy, discretion, and integrity
  • ability to travel and work in diverse, challenging and potentially unstable environments for extended periods of time
  • fluency in English required, French highly advantageous

Focus areas and responsibilities:

Provision of Technical Assistance to Country Office Programs

  • Provide technical support to project design and implementation in line with respective country program strategies, including participation in development of high-quality concept notes, proposals and reports
  • Provide DCA staff and partners with on-site capacity building support in the form of training, mentoring and practical guidance to ensure the application of protection minimum standards and good practices
  • Provide desk support functions including broad programmatic support, quality improvement and guidance as required
  • Coordinate shared learning opportunities and networking between country offices

Learning, Information and Analysis

  • Contribute to developing and strengthening thematic learning resources for Country Offices and partners (e.g., resources and materials on protection risk analysis; PSS principles and best practices, etc.).
  • Contribute to internal guidance on key operational modalities such as cash and voucher assistance and community-led programming to ensure that protection is appropriately considered
  • Contribute to ensuring data collection and analysis processes and tools capture protection priorities
  • Contribute to risk-management strategies related to collection, storage, and reporting of sensitive information

Strategy and Advocacy

  • Assist the Sr. Protection Adviser to provide input on DCA strategic documents (e.g., reports, analytical frameworks).
  • Contribute to the design, implementation and follow up of DCA advocacy strategies related to humanitarian contexts in line with organizational priorities and joint workplans.

Partnerships

  • Support engagement with relevant stakeholders to identify areas for potential collaboration on protection
  • Support DCA and the HRMA Unit with donor engagement when requested
