United States: Youth Coordinator
The IRC opened in Silver Spring in 2006 and currently resettles or assists approximately 2,500 humanitarian immigrants each year. IRC seeks a Youth Services Coordinator to implement after school and other educational enrichment programs. This position reports to the Youth Supervisor.
Job Overview/Summary:
The Youth Coordinator coordinates educational programming for newcomer youth, including planning, implementation and reporting for school enrollment, case management and training programming. The Youth Coordinator collaborates closely with the Youth Supervisor to ensure all programs integrate best practices for supporting English Language Learners and students with interrupted education, as well as social-emotional learning principles, and to ensure that IRC Silver Spring’s youth education goals and objectives are accomplished using a holistic, collaborative approach, in partnership with school staff, caregivers and newcomer youth themselves. The Youth Coordinator will supervise a small team of Youth Caseworkers, interns, and volunteers.
Major Responsibilities:
- Oversee case management services to youth ages 5-18, ensuring compliance with grant requirements on necessary documentation, service plans, case documentation and outcome measurement.
- Provide direct case management to a portion of the youth program caseload, including developing individual service plans, facilitating school enrollments, referring to program partners, conducting home visits, etc.
- Develop curriculum and facilitate school orientations for students and parents on topics such as the U.S. educational system, school culture, roles and responsibilities, U.S. laws, and safety.
- Develop presentations and provide individual and group trainings to school staff on topics related to refugee resettlement and specific educational needs of humanitarian immigrants.
- Coordinate services with school and county officials as well as other program partners. Develop referral systems and collaborative partnerships with other agencies in the community as needed.
- Maintain and provide quality control for accurate and timely client case notes, referrals and case files as required by program guidelines.
- Contribute to youth program development and organizational growth, strategic planning, outreach and advocacy activities and events as needed.
- Supervise youth caseworkers and youth case management interns.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; preferably in the field of education, social work, psychology, or a related human services field.
- 2+ years of progressively responsible experience working with at-risk youth, specifically in the context of educational and social programs.
- Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations, highly desirable.
- Proven success planning and delivering creative and engaging curricula for beginner to intermediate English Language Learners
- Cultural competency training experience, desirable
- Demonstrated ability to promote an organizational culture that reflects IRC’s core values of service, accountability, integrity, and equality. - Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Fluent in MS Office applications, especially MS Excel
- Organized, responsible, and flexible: able to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment and maintain composure under pressure.
- Fluency in English required; fluency in a second language highly desired (such as: Spanish, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, French, Amharic)
- Saturday availability during the school year.
- Must have a valid US driver’s license and regular access to an insured vehicle.
